Overweight and/or diabetes are established risk factors, e.g. through a dietary connection, for the common, sporadic type of colorectal cancer. In order to investigate whether the metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for colorectal adenoma, a total of 2531 consecutive subjects undergoing colonoscopy as a screening examination were classified into an adenoma group (n=731) and a control group (n=1800). The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 17% in the adenoma group and 11 % in the control group, the metabolic syndrome being independently associated with increased risk of colorectal adenoma in multiple logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, among the individual components of the metabolic syndrome, waist circumference was an independent predictor of colorectal adenoma. Finally, in the adenoma group, an increased risk for metabolic syndrome was more evident for proximal than distal colon, for multiple (≥3), and for advanced adenoma.
