Type 2 diabetes mellitus associated with increased risk of breast cancer
A meta-analysis was conducted using the MEDLINE database and references of retrieved articles to assess the evidence of an association between diabetes and risk of breast cancer. Of the 20 studies (mostly dealing with type 2 diabetes mellitus) reporting relative risk (RR) estimates with 95% confidence intervals, 5 were case-control studies and 15 cohort studies. A random-effects model was used to calculate summary RR. Compared to women without diabetes, women with diabetes had a statistically significant 20% increased risk of breast cancer (RR, 1.20) when pooling results of the 20 studies. Meta-analysis of the 5 cohort studies on diabetes and mortality from breast cancer yielded a summary RR of 1.24 for women with diabetes as compared with those with no diabetes.
