Association between socioeconomic status, sedentary behavior and childhood overweight in France - (18/10/06)
A total of 1016 children aged 3 – 14 years from the 1998 – 1999 French INCA (Enquete Individuelle et Nationale sur les Consommations Alimentaires) were studied as to their weight, height, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), sedentary behaviour (TV viewing and video-game use) and socioeconomic status (SES) by means of questionnaires and as to their total energy intake using a 7-day food record. Overweight (OW) was inversely associated with both SES in children over 6 years and with LTPA in children aged 3 – 5 years, and positively associated with sedentary life in childhood and adolescence. From the age of 6 years on, SES was inversely associated with sedentary behavior, which might mediate the relationship between SES and OW.
