In this population-based study on 2 334 elderly subjects from Beijing, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) was 30.5% by National Cholesterol Education Program criteria and 46.3% by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Subjects with MetS by either definition had significantly elevated odds ratios for coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. According to the authors, IDF criteria appear to be better suited for screening and estimating risk of MetS in Chinese people.
