Increased prevalence of the metabolic syndrome among Arabs when using IDF criteria - (09/05/06)
Among 863 adult subjects living in Tunis, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) was higher when using International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria as compared with 1999 World Health Organization criteria and 2001 National Cholesterol Education Program criteria: 45.5% versus 28.7% and 24.3%, respectively. This increased prevalence appears to be accounted for by the predominant focus of IDF criteria on central obesity.
