ATP III metabolic syndrome criteria superior to IDF 2005 criteria in predicting vascular events? - (05/05/06)

In 750 coronary patients, prospectively followed for vascular events over 4 years, Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) criteria for the metabolic syndrome significantly predicted vascular events, but International Diabetes Federation criteria did not. ATPIII criteria remained significantly predictive after adjustment for type 2 diabetes, but no longer after adjustment for high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol levels whilst these lipid features were significantly predictive even after adjustement for the metabolic syndrome.
