Establishing the concept of visceral fat syndrome and clarifying its molecular mechanisms. -
This paper emphasized the role of visceral fat accumulation as the most important factor responsible for the onset of several disorders such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As it was found that adipocyte not only acts to store excess energy and could also excrete physiologically active substances called adipocytokines, the adipocentric hypothesis has been proposed, which places adipocyte accumulation at the center of the mechanism underlying the onset of various common disorders.
