Increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes in Taiwan, especially in young subjects - (15/08/06)
Analysis of data obtained by telephone interviews from 93484 Taiwanese patients revealed an increasing incidence of diagnosed type 2 diabetes, for each sex and in most age groups, during 1992 - 1996. The overall 5-year incidences for men and women were 187 and 218 per 100,000. The increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes was higher in men than in women (3.5 vs 2.1) and was most marked – 2.8 fold - in the youngest age group (<35 years). There was a parallel increase in obesity trends but no significant overall change in parental diabetes.
