Prevalence and characteristics of the metabolic syndrome in the San Antonio Heart and Framingham Offspring Studies.
This study reports the prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome in the San Antonio and Framingham Offspring Study. The Metabolic Syndrome was defined by using both the NCEP-ATP III and the WHO criteria. Rates were highest in Mexican-American women and lowest in white women. Importantly, regardless of the definition, the Metabolic Syndrome was associated with elevated levels of insulin resistance and predicted coronary heart disease risk.
