Compared with controls, ultrasonographically measured maximum and mean aortic intima-media thickness were significantly higher in 40 newborn babies with intrauterine growth retardation, even more so after adjustment for birth weight. Further, serum triglyceride levels were also significantly higher in the newborn babies with growth retardation as compared with controls. Thus, prenatal events may predispose to later cardiovascular risk.
