Michel P. HERMANS

Professor, Specialist in Internal Medicine in 1992, and in Endocrinology and Diabetes.
Prof Michel P. Hermans obtained his medical degree in 1984 (Louvain University Medical School in Brussels). His early research years were devoted to studying beta-cell biophysics and stimulus-secretion coupling. He became a specialist in Internal Medicine in 1992, and in Endocrinology and Diabetes in 1997. He was awarded the "Suzanne et Jean Pirard Prize", from the Association Belge du Diabète. In 1994, as Visiting Fellow at the Diabetes Research Laboratories, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford and as Honorary Senior Registrar at the Radcliffe Infirmary, he was involved in validating the computer-version of the HOMA-CIGMA model for measuring insulin resistance and beta-cell function, under the supervision of J. Levy and the late R. Turner.
Prof Hermans currently holds a Senior Consultant position at St-Luc Academic Hospital in Brussels (Endocrine and Nutrition Unit), and is a Senior Lecturer on diabetes and nutrition as well as on sports nutrition and legal medicine pertaining to diabetes at Louvain University Medical School in Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. His current research areas include e.a. new risk factors and polymorphisms in atherosclerosis and macroangiopathy and the ethno-geographical determinants of insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes in ethnic minorities in Belgium and in Sub-Saharan Africans, as well as in secondary forms of diabetes.
Prof Michel P. Hermans was also awarded the following diplomas from the Open University in Milton Keynes (UK): Natural Sciences (2000); Earth Sciences (2003); Human Geography & Environment (2003), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Social Sciences (2004). As an active Earthcorps member, he was involved in numerous field expeditions in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, especially Sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from paleo-anthropology to the study of rainforest biodiversity and ecosystem management. He is also a laureate from the “Concours National de Musique Pro Civitate” (piano) and holds a Diplôme supérieur in Chamber Music.
